Ever wondered why medical scrubs are usually blue or green? Or how they became the everyday uniform of healthcare professionals?

The scrubs we know today have come a long way from the stiff, white garments once worn in operating theatres. Their evolution tells a story of medical discoveries, changing workplace needs and smart colour choices.

Before Scrubs: What Did Surgeons Wear in Ireland?

In 19th-century Ireland, surgeons often operated in their everyday clothes, sometimes with a coat or apron over them.

Hygiene standards were very different back then. Surgical clothing wasn't always washed between procedures, increasing the risk of infection.

As Irish hospitals adopted better hygiene practices in the late 1800s, white surgical clothing became more common.

But why white?

White made stains easier to spot, was suitable for regular washing and bleaching, and became a symbol of cleanliness.

However, as operating theatres evolved, white soon gave way to green and blue.

Why Did Medical Scrubs Turn Green and Blue?

As operating theatres introduced brighter lighting, white clothing and surgical drapes created glare that could make surgery visually uncomfortable.

In 1914, American surgeon Dr Harry Sherman introduced green into an operating theatre to help create a more comfortable visual environment.

Green and blue gradually became popular choices because they reduced the harshness of white surroundings and offered useful visual contrast.

And that's why green and blue remain closely associated with operating theatres today.

So, Why Are They Called Scrubs?

The term scrubs comes from the surgical practice of "scrubbing in", when healthcare professionals thoroughly clean their hands and forearms before an operation.

The clothing worn by surgical teams eventually became known as scrubs, and the name stuck.

How Scrubs Made Their Way Beyond Operating Theatres

Originally, scrubs were mainly associated with surgical teams. Hospital staff and nurses often wore dresses, aprons and traditional nursing caps.

But healthcare work was changing, and uniforms needed to keep up.

During the later decades of the 20th century, practical scrub tops and trousers became increasingly popular beyond operating theatres.

They offered several everyday advantages:

  • Easier movement: Comfortable designs made bending, lifting and reaching more practical.

  • Simpler care: Many scrub fabrics could be machine-washed regularly.

  • Useful features: Pockets, adjustable waistbands and lightweight materials improved convenience.

  • More choice: Scrubs became available in different cuts and styles rather than traditional uniform designs.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought further attention to practical uniforms and appropriate laundering, although dress codes continue to vary between healthcare workplaces.

Today, scrubs are a familiar sight in hospitals, GP practices, dental clinics and care facilities throughout Ireland.

What Do Scrub Colours Mean in Ireland?

Scrub colours aren't just about personal preference. Many healthcare organisations use different colours to help patients and colleagues identify staff roles.

However, there isn't one universal colour code followed by every hospital or healthcare facility in Ireland.

Here are some commonly seen shades:

Scrub Colour

Common Association

Navy Blue

Nursing and other clinical roles

Caribbean Blue

Healthcare assistants in many Irish healthcare settings

Theatre Green

Surgical and operating theatre teams

Ceil Blue

Surgical and general clinical workwear

Royal Blue

Various clinical roles, depending on workplace policy

Black and Pewter

Some private clinics, dental practices and other healthcare settings

For example, Caribbean blue is widely associated with healthcare assistants in many Irish facilities, but the exact shade required depends on the employer.

Our advice: Always check your workplace's uniform policy before choosing a colour.

From Basic Cotton to Stretch Fabrics: How Scrubs Have Improved

Early scrubs were fairly basic. Think loose-fitting tops, simple trousers and fabrics that didn't offer much flexibility.

Modern healthcare uniforms are a different story.

Today's scrub collections can offer:

  • Stretch fabrics: Two-way or four-way stretch options that support easier movement.

  • Breathable materials: Lightweight fabrics designed for everyday comfort.

  • Easy-care finishes: Materials that help reduce creasing and simplify washing.

  • Better fits: Tailored, relaxed and unisex designs, plus different trouser lengths.

  • Practical details: Multiple pockets, elasticated waistbands and adjustable drawstrings.

Of course, not every scrub offers every feature. Fabric composition, stretch and washing requirements vary between collections.
