Quick Answer: Many healthcare workers in Ireland are entitled to a flat rate expenses allowance from Revenue towards the cost of their work uniforms. Nurses can claim up to €733 per year depending on their uniform arrangements, and healthcare assistants have their own separate rates. Claims are made through Revenue's myAccount service.
Buying and caring for your work uniforms is part of everyday life for many healthcare professionals. But did you know you may be entitled to tax relief towards qualifying employment expenses?
At Diamond Designs, we want to help our customers understand what they can claim. This guide explains Ireland's flat rate expenses allowance, the rates for nurses and healthcare assistants, and how to apply through Revenue.
What Is the Uniform Tax Allowance?
Revenue's Flat Rate Expenses (FRE) allowance lets eligible employees claim a deduction for certain costs associated with their jobs. Depending on the occupation, these can include uniforms, equipment and statutory registration fees.
The allowance is a set amount for your employment category. It is not calculated from the price of each scrub set you buy, and buying uniforms does not automatically make you eligible. Your occupation and the conditions attached to its allowance determine what you can claim.
How Much Can Nurses Claim?
Revenue lists the following annual allowances for nurses for 2026:
|
Your uniform arrangements |
Annual expense allowance |
|---|---|
|
You must provide and launder your own uniforms |
€733 |
|
You must provide your own uniforms, but do not launder them |
€638 |
|
Your uniforms are supplied, but you must launder them |
€353 |
|
The hospital supplies and launders your uniforms |
€258 |
These are expense deductions, not refund amounts. Revenue's nursing allowance also includes a statutory registration fee component, so it should not be described as money solely for buying scrubs. Check the full Revenue listing and its notes before claiming.
If you're in the process of choosing nurses uniforms, understanding which tier applies to you can help you budget more confidently.
What Could This Mean in Tax Savings?
As an illustration, if you qualify for a €733 deduction:
-
At a 20% Income Tax rate, the potential saving is €146.60.
-
At a 40% Income Tax rate, the potential saving is €293.20.
These calculations assume the full deduction receives relief at the stated rate and that you have enough taxable income. Your actual benefit depends on your tax position and any relief already claimed.
What About Healthcare Assistants?
Revenue has a category for nursing assistants, including attendants, orderlies and nurses' aides. Its 2026 allowances are:
|
Your uniform arrangements |
Annual expense allowance |
|---|---|
|
You must provide and launder your own uniforms |
€526 |
|
You must provide your own uniforms, but do not launder them |
€440 |
|
Your uniforms are supplied, but you must launder them |
€234 |
|
The hospital supplies and launders your uniforms |
€93 |
If you work as a healthcare assistant, check whether your duties fit this Revenue category. Do not select the nurse allowance simply because you wear similar scrubs. HCAs in many Irish hospitals are required to wear Caribbean blue scrubs, if you're supplying and laundering your own, the allowance is well worth claiming.
Can Other Healthcare Professionals Claim?
Other occupations appear on Revenue's list, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, radiographers, phlebotomists and veterinary nurses.
Each category has its own rates and conditions. Some include statutory registration fees, and certain rates changed from 2023. Always check the allowance for your occupation and the year you are claiming.
If you work in physiotherapy or a similar allied health role and supply your own workwear, it's also worth exploring our physiotherapy uniforms range, particularly if you're replacing scrubs before a new claim year.

How Far Back Can You Claim?
The four-year refund limit applies to flat rate expenses.
For example, during 2026, the previous four tax years are 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. A refund claim for 2022 must be made by 31 December 2026.
You must have qualified in each year claimed; your current job or uniform arrangements may differ from earlier years.
What If Your Occupation Has No Flat Rate Allowance?
You may still be able to claim qualifying actual employment expenses. Revenue requires that you paid the expense yourself, have supporting evidence, were not reimbursed by your employer, and incurred it wholly, exclusively and necessarily in performing your duties.
This is a strict test. Eligible claims are made after the year ends through Your Job – Other PAYE Expenses on your Income Tax Return. Do not assume every work clothing purchase qualifies.
Revenue explains that an identifiable uniform — or one bearing an employer's logo — which an employee is required to supply and wear will generally meet the conditions. Ordinary clothing does not qualify simply because it is worn at work. Keep your uniform receipts, and ask Revenue if you are unsure which claim route applies.

Check Your Entitlement Before You Claim
Before submitting, confirm:
-
Your correct employment category.
-
Who provides and launders your uniforms.
-
Whether your employer reimburses relevant costs.
-
Which allowance applies to each tax year.
-
Whether the relief has already been claimed.
A few minutes checking your details can help you claim the relief you are entitled to.
